I got saved about two years ago. Most days I'm fine, then I mess up and suddenly wonder if any of it was real.
I've read 1 John. Still scared. How do you people live with assurance without going soft on sin?
Brother, struggle after sin doesn't automatically mean you were never saved. Assurance sits on what Jesus finished, not how warm you feel this week. 1 John 1:9 is for believers: confess, receive cleansing, get back up. Romans 8:1 also helps — no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus. Stay around people who open the Word with you, and talk to a mature believer you trust when the doubts spike.
Same here after I yelled at my kids last Thursday. The enemy loves to turn conviction into 'maybe you're fake.' Glad someone named the difference.
This is what I needed. I've been measuring salvation by my last good week. Going to memorise Romans 8:1 this month.
Don't go soft on sin AND don't baptise panic as discernment. Hebrews 10:22 says draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean. Nearness is the goal after failure, not distance.
Practical thing that helped me: keep a small notebook. When doubt hits, write (1) what I did, (2) what Scripture says about forgiveness, (3) one obedient step. Feelings follow truth slower than we want, but they do follow.
Read the whole of 1 John slowly, not only the assurance verses. John expects Christians to stumble (1 John 2:1) and still insists we can know we have eternal life (1 John 5:13). Knowing is based on believing the Son, walking in light, and loving the brothers — not sinlessness.
I used to confuse conviction with condemnation. Conviction is usually specific and pulls you toward Jesus. Condemnation is vague, crushing, and makes you hide from church. After I fail I try to pray out loud within the hour: 'Lord, that was sin. Thank You for the cross. Help me obey next.' Then I text a brother. Hiding is what kept my doubts loud (James 5:16).
As a pastor I'd also ask: are you under teaching that makes every failure mean you're lost? That produces either despair or fake holiness. Gospel assurance makes people more serious about sin, not less — because you finally have a Father to run to (Luke 15).
One more angle: sometimes 'assurance problems' are really sleep, anxiety, or isolation problems wearing spiritual clothes. Get rest, see a doctor if your mind won't stop spiralling, and still cling to Christ. God uses means.
