Do I need formal church membership?
I show up every week. Never signed anything. Is membership biblical or just church admin culture?

The NT assumes belonging you can see: shepherds who know people, mutual accountability, shared mission. Formal membership is one careful way churches live that out. Acts 2:41-42; Hebrews 13:17 — obey your leaders, for they are keeping watch over your souls.

Floating forever can be fear of commitment dressed as freedom. Ask yourself honestly.

1 Corinthians 12 — body metaphor implies identifiable belonging, not anonymous attendance only.

You're already functionally 'in' if you're known and committed — paperwork makes it clear for care and discipline.

Membership says: these are my people; these leaders can call me; I will serve and be corrected here.

Different traditions formalise differently. Seek a church where the substance of covenant community is real.

If a church uses membership only for control or money pressure, that's a red flag — not a reason to reject belonging altogether.
