I treat the OT as one story aiming at Christ: promise, presence, sacrifice, kingship, exile, hope. Genesis, Exodus, Psalms, Isaiah were my on-ramps. Study Bible notes helped for maps and names.
Questions I ask: Does this stir love for God or dull it? Does it make sin look normal? Could I thank God for this with a clear conscience? Holiness is freedom, not a hobby of rule-collecting.
Look at Jesus. Responsibility without domination. Courage with tenderness. Strength that protects the vulnerable. Swagger isn't holiness.
Be present. Pray with them, not only about them. Help with meals/errands. Encourage professional support. "Just cheer up" is not ministry. Job's friends helped until they started explaining.
