Not looking for a rulebook. What actually helped you honour God while getting to know someone? Boundaries that weren't weird or legalistic?

Brother here: I wasted years on 'talking' with no clarity. Ambiguity is not kindness. Ephesians 4:15 — speak truth in love. If you're not free to pursue marriage, say so early.

Talk about money, kids, church commitment, and conflict style before emotions outrun honesty. Proverbs 19:2 — desire without knowledge is not good. Romance is not a substitute for character.

Legalism is 'these rules make us holy.' Wisdom is 'these limits help us love Jesus and each other tomorrow morning.' Ask: does this stir prayerfulness or fog? Song of Songs is passionate and still guarded — timing matters.

The 'fog' question is useful. Whenever we ignored it we always regretted the conversation we couldn't have with clear heads later.

What helped us: clear intentions by date three ('I'm getting to know you with marriage in view'), no late-night alone time at flats, and an older couple who could ask nosy questions. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 — holiness and honour, not secrecy. Dating without community gets weird fast.

We wrote boundaries when we were calm, not when we were tempted: no sleeping over, limit physical touch, phones face-up on the table when talking hard things. It felt awkward for a week and then freeing. 2 Timothy 2:22 — flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness with those who call on the Lord.

Also: unfollow soft porn culture and late-night scrolling while dating. You can't ask for purity in the relationship while feeding the opposite alone (Matthew 5:28-29).

If you can't pray together without it becoming a makeout session, change the setting. Pray on a walk or with others nearby. Matthew 6:13 — lead us not into temptation — includes geography.
